Moving Up

We moved into our THREE bedroom apartment this past Saturday- and the boys are already beginning to sleep better. As much as I want them to room together, they get so much more rest apart. Movers came for about 2 hours on Saturday morning to help hubby move the big stuff, and I just watched the move from the patio with the boys. It's so hard for me to not help move boxes, but my baby bump is getting in the way!

Oh and more on that-- at my first midwife appointment last week, I was informed that my abdominals have separated. Probably because I did help (carry boxes) on the move from Fort Worth to San Antonio. So I have really been restricted now. I have to watch the boys but also try to not lift them! I take J the bathroom constantly and am lifting him onto the stool and of course I'm doing it improperly and just bending at the waist. How does one bend the knees to pick up a toddler a foot off the ground? I'm trying and I look pretty hysterical. So I'm hoping I don't damage my abdominals further and cause a "mummy tummy" in which one looks 5-6 months pregnant for the rest of their life!

Then Sunday, we went to church and went to check out the Central Market in town- about a 20 minute drive. I love their food, but this location is just not the same as Fort Worth and we were really nostalgic for 'home.' We ate there after shopping and both boys fell asleep on the way home. Fine for J, he is still easily moved in his sleep. But D, oh no he still had to walk himself and open the door with the key and by then he was no longer tired. I think he finally did fall asleep but not until he wound back down. Then we met a group of young families from the church at the park. It was an amazing park, Phil Hardberger Park, but a different area than we had been to before. The boys loved playing on the playground, snacking, and playing with some other kids from their preschool class at church.

And now after getting we have been faced with some pretty big life decisions that are unfolding quickly and we have been trying to keep on top of! I will update on that soon!

Hubby's Birthday

More Restaurants, we -of course - went out some more for hubby's birthday! On Sunday night, we went to Dough with the boys and hubby's parents. We ate:

Mozerealla and Burrata Bar

SAMPLER

The Rollatini, Richard’s Caprese,
Burrata & Prosciutto, flatbread

ANTIPASTO PLATTER

Vegetables, olives, cured meats, cheese, flatbread

PIZZA:

BLANCA

House-pulled mozzarella, Fontina, Parmigiano Reggiano, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, sage

BUFALA MARGHERITA - AS SEEN ON THE FOOD NETWORK

Mozzarella di Bufala, tomato sauce, Parmigiano Reggiano, Bluebonnet Farms basil

ARUGULA & PROSCIUITTO

Prosciutto di San Daniele, house-pulled mozzarella, arugula, truffle oil, Parmigiano Reggiano

Everything was amazing and I can't wait to go back! We did have about a 45 minute wait at 6pm on Sunday night which we were not expecting, but I guess I'm not surprised now because the food was THAT good. I will want the Burrata and Prosciutto again- it had a perfect pinch of salt (I'm guessing Kosher) and the Arugala and Prosciutto Pizza. I love arugula and this prosciutto was perfect, not 'gamey' at all. This restaurant was also 'farm to table," had a pizza oven shipped over from Italy, and had house-made cheese. They brought out balls of pizza dough for our kids to squash and flatten and let them chooses their own toppings to make a pizza! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves pizza! They have even opened a new location in Dallas.

AND, for hubby's REAL birthday on Monday we went to Thai Chili off of Stone Oak Pkwy. It was our second time at this restaurant since moving here less than a month ago! So yes, we love it and ordered our usual thai favorites of: Chicken Sate, Pad Thai, and Green Curry. It was a late dinner the boys and they were quite tired and squirmy because we had to go after their swim lessons ended at 6pm. This was the boys second week of swim lessons and they are both loving it, and I think they will be even more excited about swimming this summer after these lessons.

Date Night x2

Date Night #1: Valentine's Day was great for hubby and I because we got to spend some time checking out new restaurants in San Antonio! We are both 'foodies' and love to find places that truly care about the food they serve. The first was Barraca: Paella & Tapas Bar. Hubby spent a year in Spain way back when and has familiar memories of eating tapas for dinner and so I thought it would be a fun date night. I think the restaurant just opened less than 6 months ago and the food was amazing! We started with Spiced Almonds and Jamon y Queso. The almonds were great and we kept wanting more. The jamon was smokey and the manchego was soft but delicious. Then on to the main course- PAELLA! There were 3 to choose from and we ordered seafood paella. Neither of us is a fan of oysters and mussels, but from our travels to Spain and Italy we have learned to be open minded and that they can be great. And surprisingly they were! This was the first mussels and clams state-side that hubby and I have liked and we ate everyone knowing they wouldn't keep. And then we had to have desert because after all it was Valentine's Day and I have been constantly craving sweets with this pregnancy! We ordered the special bread pudding- and the carmel sauce that was drizzled on it was amazing, but I did have to request extra since the bread pudding was a little dried out. I would say that we enjoyed Barraca and would return, probably sans children although there were a couple children at the restaurant. I would return to try more tapas, there were SO many, and for the sangria. The sangria was my favorite thing and hubby liked it too.- They offered both white and red with fresh fruit in the glass. So glad that my in-laws decided to come in town and give us a few nights without the kiddos!

Date Night #2: Stella: Plublic House across from Barraca. We saw this place the night before and thought that it looked appealing - one wall is open to the patio and the bar was inside with local beers on tap and it is a "Farm to Pizza" restaurant. My in-laws decided to keep our boys for a second night and we, being 'foodies,' could not wait to go back and try out this restaurant! First we ordered the Wild Mushroom Mac n Cheese with truffle oil and we ate it so fast that I think I said that I wished we had ordered 3 bowls! Then, we ordered Buratta and Heirloom jam as a salad. It came with red potatoes and was delicious, but I was surprised by some type of herb mixture inside the buratta that was unexpected. Next was the real reason we came back - a pizza that sounded exactly like what my hubby has always wished for in a pizza and has tried to order-

  • tomato sauce, jalapeno cheddar pepperoni, hand-made organic mozzarella, caramelized onions & black olives

YUMMY! Hubby loved the pizza! And then, of course, I had to have desert. We ordered the waitress's suggestion that she said had won 2013 Best Desert- Salted Carmel Panna Cotta. And yes hubby loves salted carmel so much that I think he might have enjoyed this desert as much as I did! I loved this restaurant and would definitely come back. I would re-order the Mac n Cheese and maybe the Panna Cotta but would try a different pizza of my choosing next time! Oh and I forgot to mention what beer hubby tried...it was lighter than an IPA (his favorite lately) but it was recommended by the waitress and he was happy with the selection. I love that this restaurant had a seasonal menu with local food and house-made cheeses. We hope to be back sometime, and I think I may bring the boys if we went early enough although I didn't see any children there at 8pm.

Feeling Home and Teething

We have not gotten to move into our 3 bedroom apartment and are still living in boxes! It was February 5th, then the 7th, then the 17th, and now the 21st! We have learned a lot about ourselves and the boys living in less than 1000 sq ft. I wouldn't change this time, but I'm so ready to unpack. That's really what's gotten to me, not the close quarters and lack of space, but living our of suitcases and boxes.

After writing that yesterday, I decided to stop complaining and get to work unpacking because it is something I can control. AND to set up internet and TV service! So by hubby mounted our TV that had been propped up against the wall in our kitchen and our U-verse was installed this morning! I am thankful for the quick turnaround. And the wires happen to be in the master closet- which really gave me the motivation to hang all the clothes in my suitcase and make my shoe rack to unpack shoes onto. We were up till 11:30pm last night, but at least now we sort of feel like home!

The boys and I went for a quick Target run after U-verse was installed and my new-2 year old, J, decided to cry and scream the entire time. That's right - over 20 minutes of hysteria. Thankfully D decided to be an angel and stay seated in the cart and quiet. I think J mostly wanted out of the cart. I know that he would run wild through the store and I cannot let him out or to stand and jump in the cart. I wish I could wear him on my back, but being pregnant it really doesn't work with my growing baby bump. So, I tried calming him with snacks which were warmly accepted and then SPIT on the floor. --Oh did I mention he is getting his 2-year molars!

I hate teething for infants it is awful, but for 2 year olds it's downright scary. He is now verbal and very physical. Meaning he hits. Yes my child hits, mostly me and often my face. My first boy did this too and I believe it is just a phase, but it always seems to coincide with two-year molars. J has been sleeping pretty well despite the pain. Except for 2 nights ago he woke up for 3 hours and wonderful hubby ended up sleeping on the floor beside his bed for a few hours so that we could all get some sleep. And then yesterday, J woke up from his nap saying "owie, mouth, tooth" and that's when I realized what was happening! And yes the top-right tooth has broken through the skin and is half-way out! Hoping J and all of us get through this quickly and relatively pain-free!

Attack of the Prickly Pear

It was a beautiful 70 degree afternoon and we went to Eisenhower Park with the boys and dog! There was a little playground and lots of paved trails. We played on the playground for a while and D was playing with another little kid and when J walked up, D said," This is my little brother. You can pet him if you want to." Hubby and I just about died laughing! I guess D is at least learning the art of introductions!

Then, we went for a short walk with Lily and the boys and D touched a Texas Prickly Pear Cactus. I got the tiny thorn out of him and he learned the lesson that he wanted to never touch that again "or at least not today," as daddy put it. Shortly thereafter, J grabs a cactus and got the thorns all in his fingertips but daddy was able to get those out. Then J ran the other way on the trail and daddy went after him, D and I went on ahead and hid at a split in the trail. D wanted to get in the bushes to hid but I convinced him to stay on the trail. We yelled "boo" and then D went back over by the bushes to yell again, but this time he yelled "owwww."

D had tried to climb back in the bushes and had sat on a prickly pear! Thankfully, I had insisted that both boys wear jeans and not all the thorns got thru to his skin. But I had to have D pull down his pants right there and I was bent over his bottom trying to pull the thorns out from his inner thigh! Oh my what a sight some hikers got! Some of the thorns were so brittle they broke off in his leg; other thorns had to be pulled out of his jeans before he could pull them back up.

On the way home the boys continued their ongoing car argument about giving and refusing one another pretend cookies. It is so strange to me, but sweet to see them in their own little world until one starts yelling "mine." And yes these "cookies" are complete pretend, but they are so upset if they are not being shared!

After making it back home, I did an internet search for prickly pear thorn remedies and found: tweezers, duct tape, and Elmer's glue. We tried the tweezers for a bit, but that skin is so sensitive that D was cringing. We skipped the duct tape, but tried Elmer's glue. That seemed to work great and he hasn't complained since! It took a bit to dry, before we could peel it off, but I'm hopeful that it got all the remaining thorns out.

Potty Training - Night Issues

I'm not completely sure why, but we have potty-trained both of our boys before they turned 2. J potty-trained a month ago at about 23 months old, he just seemed ready. We picked a time convenient to us, when we would be staying at home. So it was during the week between Christmas and New Years when we were at home most of the time and it was too cold to even venture outside to the park. It mostly worked great, but still took a little time. We moved to San Antonio 4 weeks later and although I knew that may prove difficult, he has had very few accidents! It was mainly the first few days...and the first day at his new pre-school. I still put him in diapers for naps (which he usually keeps dry or occasionally poopy - tmi) and then also at night.

And that is what brings me to my current thought on potty training. Once both of my boys were potty-trained they began to wake up at night fussing to go pee, which would then cause problems because half asleep they still want to walk to the bathroom, get on the stool, pull their pants down, pee standing, or even worse sit and pee everywhere! If helped in anyway D would throw a huge tantrum- in the middle of the night that was incomprehensible. Now J will just refuse to go if he cannot do everything himself, better than a tantrum, but then again screams 'pee pee' about 10 seconds after getting back in bed.

We began taking D to pee when we went to bed and then again in the early morning hours, around 4am. This seemed to work since he was sleepier than awaking himself and we got around the awful nighttime outbursts. Now that D is almost 4, we occasionally take him to pee before going to bed but that it and he will usually wake up dry. But, now J he woke up at 3am screaming last night. And he has a few nights before this too. And I figure that now I need to start taking him pee in the middle of the night... he stayed dry till then, so maybe once would do. I had forgotten about this potty training problem, but it makes complete sense that one you recognize the feeling of needing to go while awake it would begin to set off the same triggers at night. This is not really a problem, but I am already struggling to get sufficient sleep most nights with a baby jumping on my bladder and doing backflips in my belly!

On Finding and Waiting

My older boy has always been very strong-willed, type A, whatever you want to call it. Sometimes it proves to be very challenging and exhausting, but I know one day that he will be a very strong man that will not easily be swayed. Since our move, D has been very upset if we find anything. Everything is constantly misplaced because we haven't really unpacked and given things a place. This morning it was D's shoes! He was upset I found them lying on the kitchen floor and refused to put them on until they were 'hid' again - which I refused to cooperate and set off this outburst.

Today is the day we were supposed to get the keys to our 3 bedroom apartment! BUT it is not finished and we have not been given an actual date - we are hopeful that
we will be moving before next weekend. We are still living out of suitcases, boxes and have our mattresses on the floor. It's getting old fast! We have been living out of suitcases since Jan 5th... wow, I didn't realize that it has been a month! I had to look on my calendar to find that date and am amazed because it has been one of those situations that has caused time to speed up and slow down all at the same time.

Our First Weekend & J's Birthday

I have been trying to post pics from J's 2nd birthday since Saturday's celebration but our temporary internet has been on the fritz. Ugh.

We had SO much fun with J and D on Saturday. My mom was in town and went with us to the 'Kiddie Park' by the San Antonio Zoo. The park had only-timey kids rides for kids over 12 months! J loved being able to do everything and riding rides alone and with brother! We got them each an unlimited ride band and they went on everything! I'm so glad we got there early, opening at 10am because after 11am it started to get busier. It was to perfect 75 degree day and we had a great time celebrating!

After we made it to Red Robin before the boys fell asleep (but just barely). Both boys downed ALL their lunch and then each has a sundae for J's birthday. They both napped well and then we went and checked out Phil Hardburger park. The boys had a blast running around to all the different things to climb on. But, I could never take them to this park on my own because it is quite spread out and neither of my boys have any fear of climbing to heights of over 6ft.

After the boys went to bed, hubby and I went over to La Cantera. There was no parking at 8pm, we had to circle for 10min and follow someone to their parking spot. We did get a seat right away at the bar at Yard House and had an appetizer, but we weren't as impressed as we have been before with other locations.

Sunday morning we went and checked out a new church which we liked and the boys loved! And we look forward to meeting some new people. Then we went and did our regular Sunday afternoon grocery shopping. We went to HEB Plus and it was a mad house! I could find hubby and the boys just from the boys screaming! Oh my! Tonight hubby went to a work Superbowl Party, he's from Seattle and was very happy! My mom made the boys and I delicious fried rice for dinner and we had a good evening with the boys.
